DataForSEO: what it is and what it really costs
DataForSEO is the data source behind most of this course: live Google results, search volumes and competitor keywords, through one API, paid per call. Here is what it is, what it actually costs us, and where it falls short.

What DataForSEO gives you
- SERP API — the live Google results page for any query, location and device, as JSON: organic results, features, People Also Ask, AI Overviews.
- Keyword data — Google Ads search volumes, CPC and competition for up to 1,000 phrases per request.
- Labs data — what a competitor domain ranks for, keyword ideas and related terms, without running a live search for each.
There is no dashboard to log in to and click around. That is the point for this course: you ask a precise question, pay for exactly that answer, and keep the result in your own database.

What it costs — from our own invoices
| Call | What we paid | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads search volume | $0.09 per request | Up to 1,000 phrases in one request. This site's keyword research: 209 phrases, $0.09. |
| Live SERP, top 10 results | ≈ $0.003 per query | Depth 30 was ≈ $0.006. Cache every response so you never pay twice. |
| Labs (ranked keywords, ideas) | $0.012 per request + $0.00012 per row | Good for competitor gaps; verify critical positions with a live SERP call. |

Where it falls short
- Volumes under ~10 a month show as 0. “0” means below the measurement floor, not “no demand” (episode 19).
- Strict input rules. The search volume endpoint rejects a whole request if one phrase contains a comma or an ampersand.
- Rate limits. The volume endpoint allows about 12 requests a minute — batch your phrases instead.
- Singular vs plural matter. The wrong form can zero out a whole dataset (episode 20).
How this course uses it
Every paid call goes through the same habits: estimate the cost first, run a small validation request, cache the raw response, then turn the JSON into rows you can query. Episode 2 covers the budget, episode 3 the first call, and the SERP and gap modules build on it.
Questions
Is DataForSEO free?
No. It is pay-as-you-go: you top up a balance and each API call is charged. There is a sandbox for testing request formats without cost (episode 3 shows it). In our experience a $10–20 balance lasts a long time for analysis work.
Is DataForSEO a Semrush or Ahrefs alternative?
For the data, often yes — SERPs, search volumes and ranked keywords. For the dashboards, no: DataForSEO is an API without a reporting interface. You (or Claude Code) write the queries and keep the results.
Do I need to code?
A little. The course uses Claude Code to write the scripts and teaches you to check them. Every episode's scripts are in the free downloads.
